Portmore continue late push for play-off berth with Tivoli clash
FORMER champions Portmore United continue their late push towards a top six play-off spot when they tackle Tivoli Gardens at 4:00 pm at Ferdie Neita Park.
In the other games there will be a double-header at Drax Hall where, at 1:00 pm, Dunbeholden take on Montego Bay before Mount Pleasant play Arnett Gardens at 3:15 pm.
Another double-header will be at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium where Molynes United take on Faulkland FC at 2:00 pm before the Waterhouse FC versus Harbour View game at 4:15 pm.
On Monday, Cavalier play Humble Lions at 5:00 pm and Chapelton Maroons take on Vere United at 7:30 pm. Both games will be at Ashenhiem Stadium.
With five games to go before the top six play-offs begin, eight teams remain in contention and all eyes will be focused on seventh-place Portmore United on 32 points and the team holding the last play-off spot in Waterhouse who are sixth on 34 points.
Of the two, Portmore United seems to have the easier game as they play a Tivoli Gardens team down in 11th spot on 19 points and who are clearly out of the title race and well clear of the relegation zone.
Tivoli Gardens will have little to play for, hence Portmore United should be the more motivated of the two and are expected to secure a vital win that will certainly enhance their play-off chances.
The pressure will certainly be on a Waterhouse team holding on to the last play-off spot and having a difficult game against champions Harbour View sitting in fourth spot on 36 points and looking to consolidate their position.
A win for Waterhouse would see them leapfrog Harbour View and transfer the pressure on the champions. It should be an intriguing encounter as Waterhouse won their first meeting 4-0.
Eighth-place Dunbeholden on 29 points have a slim chance of making the play-offs sitting five points adrift, and that should be the key factor as they take on a struggling Montego Bay United in 10th spot on 23 points.
Again, while Dunbeholden have it all to play for, Montego Bay are less motivated at this stage and with nothing to play for, basically. That should benefit Dunbeholden who are fancied to secure three valuable points.
Meanwhile, in the marquee matchup which could be a precursor to the finals, leaders Arnett Gardens on 42 points tackle third-place Mount Pleasant on 38 points.
A win for the visiting Arnett Gardens would almost certainly secure a top two spot, which would send them directly to the semi-finals instead of the quarter-final play-offs.
It should be a humdinger of a match as Arnett Gardens inflicted the first defeat of the season for Mount Pleasant 3-2, ending their five-match winning streak. Revenge is on the cards for the home team.
Following last week’s setback, Molynes United will be hoping to rekindle their very slim chances of making the playoffs when they play relegation-bound Faulkland FC. Molynes are in ninth spot on 25 points, nine points adrift of the last play-off spot.
While there is little hope for Molynes United, Faulkland can save their season with a win, sitting 13th with 10 points. They are six points adrift of safety, know the magnitude of a win, and should be fighting tooth and nail for the points.
