WITH the much-anticipated Mouttet Mile race set for today at Caymanas Park, horseracing enthusiasts are gearing up for a spectacular showcase.

The Mouttet Mile, recognised as the richest horse race in the Caribbean with a purse of US$150,000, is not just a financial heavyweight but a magnet for top-tier racing talent and some of the best thoroughbred horses in Jamaica.

In addition to the local contenders, the 16-horse Mouttet Mile field has also managed to draw the attention of international competitors. Among the noteworthy entrants are five US-bred horses and one Canadian-bred horse, adding a global flair to the glossy event.

The US-bred horses include the likes of I Am Fred, Easy As ABC, Is That A Fact, Runaway Algo, and Rough Entry, each bringing its own competitive edge to the track. The Canadian-bred entry, ironically named American Tap, adds to the diverse mix of participants vying for victory.

Mahogany, Atomica, She’s My Destiny and Mamma Mia are the leading local contenders in the event.

In a testament to the event’s international appeal, overseas-based jockeys Daisuke Fukumoto from Canada and Julien Leparoux from the US will also be showcasing their skills at Caymanas Park on Mouttet Mile day. Their presence adds an extra layer of excitement, as fans eagerly anticipate the clash of talents from different corners of the world.

Solomon Sharpe, the executive chairman of Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL), said he is expecting a fun-filled day at the track.

“The build-up has been tremendous; the horsemen are extremely excited. It’s not just the big race, even the undercard has [also] been getting a lot of attention. Out of the 134 horses nominated to run, everybody thinks that they are going to win,” he said.
