Robles disqualified from 110 hurdles at worlds
DAEGU, South Korea (AP) — One of the most anticipated races of the world championships turned into one of the most controversial with Olympic champion Dayron Robles accused of pulling rival Liu Xiang out of the hunt for gold in the 110-metre hurdles.Related story:Heartache for Thomas in 110m hurdles final
The field judges disqualified the Cuban, which would give the title instead to Jason Richardson of the United States, who profited from Liu’s tangle to sneak across the line in second. The Cubans have lodged an appeal.
Liu, who finished third, says “when I approached the ninth hurdle, Robles pulled me. It made me slow down.”
Andrew Turner of Great Britain, who finished fourth, has now been awarded the bronze
David Oliver of the United States was a pre-race favorite but crossed the line fifth.
Dwight Thomas of Jamaica did not finish.
