GROS ISLET, St Lucia (CMC) — West Indies Women’s Captain Hayley Matthews said her side hopes to transfer its form against Ireland Women, from the preceding One-Day International series, into the Twenty20 Internationals, the first of which will be played on Tuesday in St Lucia.

The Caribbean side won the ODI series 2-0 and several players got their groove back, including Matthews, and she expects her side to carry that momentum into the three-match series that will be played at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium.

“[We’re] going out there and playing some really positive cricket,” she said in an interview with CWI Media. “We have got some momentum to work with coming from the ODIs so we are just looking to go out there and carry some of that form into the T20I series and have an even better series.”

The squad for the series includes three Under-19 players — Zaida James, Ashmini Munisar, and Djenaba Joseph — and lead selector Ann Browne-John said the selection panel decided to retain the players who took part in the ODI series.

“These players have shown form and performance, which enabled the team to secure a series win and which the team has been striving for in recent times,” she said.

“As we continue the rebuilding we believe we have found a competent balance in mix of senior players and the younger players selected. It is in keeping with our ethos of preparing the next batch of West Indies Women’s players by combining the experienced and the newly capped players.”

West Indies Women have won only two of the eight T20Is they have played for the year — one of which was against Ireland Women by six wickets during the ICC Women’s T20I World Cup in South Africa.

In total, the hosts have faced the Irish five times in T20Is and won all five.
