10 out of 10: Fashion Futurism at Afrochella Festival
Serving 70s realness, this dynamic duo tapped into their inner psychedelic style for Day 1 of Afrochella. Nigerian fashion model Halimotu Shokunbi (left) is wearing an ultra-miniskirt with white knee-high boots, a blue I AM GIA tee and a NOMÄ Cuban Key Necklace while socialite princess Fathia Nkrumah was resplendent in a two-piece floral print with butterfly hair accessories. 10 out of 10: Fashion Futurism at Afrochella Festival

Ghana has become the certified end-of-year fashion hub in West Africa, and the final instalment of the Afrochella Festival was a testament to the next-level wardrobe excellence on the continent. Thousands of patrons showed up in their finest threads to celebrate the theme “Afrofuturism” — an ode to the forward-thinking cultural movement and a celebration of the new name of the festival, “Afrofuture” — and festivalgoers certainly did not disappoint. Our SO Global Travel, Culture and Entertainment Writer Tenille Clarke was a specially invited VVIP guest on the scene and witnessed the style greatness in the heart of Accra. With expert advice from UK-born, Trinidad and Tobago-based stylist Crystal Ivy London, Clarke also brought her own Caribbean flavour to the fashion mix at various outings, by wearing some of the region’s top designers — live, direct and in living colour.

Here’s the SO playback with some looks that stood out at the two-day event.

You can always spot a Sai Sankoh set from a mile away and this patron was regal in a two-piece Scarlett Goddess Kaftan and Sadie Pants from the Sierra Leone-born, US-based designer. (Photo: Afrochella Festival)
SO correspondent Tenille Clarke made a statement from the jet to her first event — the first-annual WOODXWATTA Festival — with a custom, floor-length jacket from Trinidad and Tobago designer Diane Carlton. She brought the contrast with a red leopard ponyhair Kendrick Trunk from award-winning NY-based designer Brandon Blackwood. “This was Tenille’s first public appearance in Ghana, and we wanted to bring black-owned designers into full focus,” explained stylist Crystal Ivy London. “Diane Carlton definitely knows how to make a splash with colour, so balancing with a white two-piece was the perfect go-to finish.” (Photo: Tenille Clarke)
Clarke took to the streets of Accra in this brunch look from Jamaican-born, Miami-based designer OCHIE. Her statement Bamboo Round Bag is from Grenadian accessories designer, Idle Minds Collective. “The style goal was to keep a clean aesthetic for this look — cool, chic and uncomplicated,” explained stylist Crystal Ivy London. “OCHIE knows to keep a cotton look sophisticated, and the material was perfect to beat the heat.” (Photo: Tenille Clarke)
It’s all about the colourful contrasts in this look with a Fimi coral jumpsuit from Jamaican designer Jae Jolly, a patterned crown from Trinbagonian Glori Retrofit and vibrant earrings from Statement Accessories. “Solids can still be festive, and this neon coral was perfect for Tenille’s chocolate brown skin tone,” Crystal Ivy London pointed out. Effortless chic was the name of the game for Clarke on Day 1 of Afrochella Festival with a full Fe Noel look. This sheer Sage Hibiscus Panty Pant and Rust Puff Sleeve Bodysuit from the Grenadian-born designer was paired with a pair of crystal sandals from Shoeaholics Jamaica. “A wide-leg fit gives a great silhouette, and viscose is the perfect material for hot days,” London stated. This festivalgoer dazzled in an off-the-shoulder crop top and shorts in a teal and tangerine print. Her razor-sharp platinum blonde cut brought the entire look together. (Photo: Afrochella Festival)

Model Sakina Dabre was head-to-toe pretty in pink traditional wear, while creative director Mohammed Black opted for a sand-coloured set. Black also chose to ring in the new year with some bold accessories to level up his look. Both completed their respective looks with futuristic eyewear – right on theme for this year’s Afrochella Festival. (Photo: Afrochella Festival)
A classic black and white print is a standout in any crowd and for this look, proportions were key. An oversized shirt was paired with a crisp white turtleneck, and he chose a chunky black platform sandal to complete the look. (Photo: Afrochella Festival)
Nigerian-Jamaican celebrity host of Afrochella Young Prince tapped Haitian-born stylist Joshua Damis for his onstage look. “We wanted to capture the ‘Afrofuturism’ theme while still keeping him comfortable onstage,” Damis said in an Instagram post. “The pinstripes [in the pants] creating an iridescent illusion of colour with motion was right on target for us.” (Photo: Afrochella Festival)
This trio of Trinbagonian beauties made the trek to Africa all the way from the twin-island republic with the stunner on the left wearing a cold-shoulder number from Caribbean fashion designer Kimo Ifetayo. She completed the look with a classic pair of leather pants and minimal accessories. (Photo: Afrochella Festival)
