Steady Love

The 2017 Emmanuel Apostolic Church Youth Camp provided the perfect backdrop for the love story of Vanessa Watt and Devon Gayle.

On the final day of camp, Vanessa and Devon were among a group of young people engrossed in conversation when a connection brewed! Though uncertainty tinged his approach, Devon mustered up the courage to begin a separate conversation with Vanessa. This would form the basis of a friendship, eventually transitioning into courtship.

On their frequent visits to Emancipation Park and with countless conversations on WhatsApp, the two uncovered shared passions and dreams. “We shared many things in common, like being goal-oriented, ministry-focused, having a strong sense of motivation, and being lovers of nature, among other things,” Devon tells Tuesday Style Vows. In the midst of their blossoming romance, KFC outings, church events, and leisurely strolls along the Waterfront provided cherished moments. “I would even accompany Vanessa to evening school at Jamaica Theological Seminary, where she was pursuing her degree in social work,” says Devon. Every opportunity to meet became a treasured rendezvous, a testament to their unwavering devotion.

The proposal unfolded on July 31, 2022, amidst the picturesque setting of Vanessa and Devon’s favourite place — you guessed it, Emancipation Park! Devon convinced Vanessa to have her parents from White Horses, St Thomas, under the guise of an “official meeting” with his parents witness the engagement. With fellow church members hidden, heart pounding with excitement, Devon led Vanessa to the designated spot. Amid friends and family emerging from their hiding places, Devon went down on one knee, and professing his love and offering a symbol of his commitment — the ring — asked her for the honour of accepting his proposal. Vanessa gladly said ‘I do!’

Up The Aisle

Their “happily ever after” began with a ‘Steady Love’-themed ceremony at Emmanuel Apostolic Church on January 28, 2023. Guided by wedding planner Sanya McHugh the team from Fanciful Decor, utilised combinations of burgundy, blush, and gold to create an elegant setting. The design also featured a circular arch at the altar adorned with floral arrangements. “Each choice was deliberate, curated with love and precision, transforming our vision into a breathtaking reality,” Vanessa tells TSV.

At the altar stood Devon, smart in a white suit with burgundy lapels from The Super Stitch. To the strains of Major’s Why I Love You, Vanessa started her walk up the aisle on the arm of her dad, David Watt. She was picture-perfect in a sweetheart neckline white ball gown with long-sleeved lace appliqué.

The ceremony was officiated by Bishop Dr Everton Thomas.

The Reception

Celebrations continued at the Liguanea Club, where the bridal party made their entrance to Waya Waya by Master KG leading the way for the grand entrance of the bride and groom. The sumptuous banquet, catered by the team at the Liguanea Club, was described by the newly-weds as a culinary delight. Master of ceremonies Aneisha Rose ably handled the formalities, which included the unveiling of the four-tiered wedding cake and toasts to the newly-weds. Vanessa and Devon then tripped the light fantastic to You Are The Reason by Calum Scott. The open dance floor brought the evening to a perfect close.
