Accused cop killer shot dead in alleged gunfight
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – Alexis White, the man accused of killing a district constable five months ago, was shot dead by the police in an alleged gunfight Monday night at Smithsfield here in Westmoreland.
According to the police, about 6:30 Monday evening officers, who were in search of White, were greeted with gunfire when they approached a house occupied by White in the Wharf Road section of the community.
“The police took evasive action and returned the fire. When the shooting subsided White was found suffering from gunshot wounds. A .38 Taurus revolver with two rounds of ammunition was taken from him. He was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” said a report from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the police’s information arm.
The CCN said that following a search of the house a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol, loaded with six 9mm cartridges, was also found.
Yesterday, the police said they were seeking a man who was in the building with White, but who fled the scene. Officers believe he was shot and injured.
White, 23, who was also known as Smiley, was accused of killing District Constable Linford Dennisur, 43, of Top Hill in Grange Hill, Westmoreland.
Dennisur was shot and killed in the community known as Russia in Westmoreland after he entered a lumber yard where he was about to transact business. His licensed firearm was stolen.
