Cocktails With

With oodles of sexy street sass and youthful swagger akin to of-the-moment pop star Rihanna, Jaye-Ann O’Connor (JO) and Jami Spence (JS) — the creators of Yahdie Conscious — certainly have what it takes to hold our attention as they muse on their just-launched Glam Rocksteady An’ Dancehall Circus (GRDC) collection inside Ambrosia. Here’s what they have to say…

What’s your favourite cocktail?

JO: We’re Guinness girls, but tonight we’re bringing the sexy with Apple Martinis.

What’s in it?

Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka

Apple sours

Splash of simple syrup

Garnish with maraschino cherries and wedges of pineapple

What do you love about chilling at Ambrosia?

JS: It’s private; we can hear ourselves talk so it’s perfect for a late-night business meeting.

JO: The staff is also friendly and the prices are reasonable.

Socialite or homebody?

JO: Can we say in-between?

JS: We like to mix things up a bit, we’re out but not every weekend.

What’s the inspiration behind GRDC?

It’s a mash-up of our style and taste over the years. We love the street vibe of ripped denim, using the torn pieces as arm bands and pairing it all with a Yahdie T-shirt. But we also appreciate class and sophistication that pairing black with leggings or a feminine skirt can give.

Flats or stilettos?

JO: I really prefer heels because I’m short.

JS: I’m tall, so I prefer flats.

Jeans or LBD?

JO: Can we say it depends?

JS: We love stepping out in Yahdie tees, but a great dress can do wonders.

What’s your essential style item?

JO and JS: Chains… we love layering accessories!

Who does your hair?

JS: I go to the barber to maintain my haircut, which is low on the sides, but I get the bouffant done at Le Sue, off Mannings Hill Road.

JO: Nordia in Papine.

Who does your nails?

JO: Sue in Papine.

JS: Denise at Le Sue.

What’s in your handbag/clutch?

JS: My business card and my BlackBerry.

JO: Lots of make-up, scents and lotion from Bath & Body Works, business cards and my BlackBerry.

What’s your style?

JO and JS: Retro-chic-punk

What perfumes are you splashing?

JO: Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue.

JS: Daisy by Marc Jacobs.

What’s your idea of the perfect date?

Having a drink, talking and getting to know the person better… definitely not a party.

What’s your idea of the perfect man?

JS: One who is supportive, confident in himself and is willing to allow me to live my dream.

JO: Yeah, that, and he must dress well, be driven and have vision.

What’s your latest project?

JS: Our website, the online store that is slated to be up and running by next weekend, and collaborating with Peace-Is costume jewellery designer Bianca Bartley.

What’s your latest obsession?

JO: Rihanna’s new album Rated R and her styling… we don’t care too much for her personal life, but her fashion sense is kicking.

What’s your ambition with respect to the development of Yahdie Conscious?

We would love to take it international, but a more immediate goal is to present it on the Caribbean Fashion Week runway next year.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

JO: Stay true to who you are, and if people don’t like that then they weren’t meant to be your friends anyway.

JS: Forget all the negative comments people make, focus on the bigger picture and strive for excellence.

And 10 years from now?

JS and JO: We must have a store… definitely, one in Jamaica and the other in either South Beach or New York.
