Cayman advance in CONCACAF Women’s U-17s

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (CMC) — The Cayman Islands became the third Caribbean team to book a spot in the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Finals when they drew 1-1 with the Dominican Republic in their second-leg qualifying match on Saturday.

Marissa McLaughlin scored after only five minutes for the home team and the result secured a 3-3 draw on aggregate, which meant Cayman advance on the “away goals” rule.

The first leg had ended 2-2 a week earlier in the Dominican Republic and the Cayman Islands are now through to the two-group CONCACAF Finals in Costa Rica next March.

The Cayman Islands will join defending champions USA, hosts Costa Rica and Haiti in Group B.

Group A will comprise Canada, Mexico, Jamaica and Panama.

McLaughlin’s early goal gave Cayman the positive start they needed.

Anajairo Burgos equalized for DR — with her third goal of qualifying — in the 26th minute but they were unable to score the winner.

The Cayman Islands become the eighth and last team in the field for the championship, set for March 9-20 in San Jose, Costa Rica.
