GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Guyanese gave Brazilian football legend Edison Arantes do Nascimento a tremendous welcome on Saturday afternoon as the famous 69-year-old arrived for a two-day visit.

On his arrival at the Cheddi Jagan Airport, Timehri, at approximately 2:50 pm local time, Pele, as he is fondly called, was given a red carpet reception by the Guyana government and said he was honoured to be invited to the country.

“I think this is one of the most important receiving that I have ever had in my life,” Pele said in halting English.

Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony called the icon an inspiration to many and declared that Guyanese were honoured to have him in the country.

Dr Anthony spoke of Pele’s powerful worldwide influence, noting that two local football clubs here — Santos and Pele — were named as a result of him.

“Sir, Guyanese from all walks of life admire you. We regard you as the greatest football player in the world,” Dr Anthony said.

Guyana Football Federation (GFF) president Colin Klass hailed the Brazilian legend and said Pele’s visit brought out the football fraternity, the business community and politicians.

“What you have done also has brought together everything and everyone in Guyana,” Klass said.

“We have politicians and the businesses and we trust this togetherness that you have created will bring about a new lease on life and our relationship will span and grow from strength to strength,” Klass said.

After a motorcade to City Hall, Pele was greeted by Georgetown’s Mayor Hamilton Green, who presented him with the keys to the city.

Pele, who was scheduled to leave last night, is in the country as guest of the popular Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament which is celebrating its 20th year.

The visit culminates with his attendance of the opening ceremony of the tournament at Providence Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Widely regarded as the greatest footballer in the game’s history, Pele has an all-time tally of 1,281 goals and is the only player to be a part of three World Cup championship winning teams — 1958, 1962 and 1970.

He played successfully for the famous Brazilian club Santos for almost 20 years.
