IT is said by those in the business that when he is “on song” selector Super Claude from Afrique Sound Station out of New York is among the very best in the business.

This was underscored in no uncertain manner at the Classic Promotions staged Soul 2 Soul held recently at the Waterfalls in Kingston.

Of the four selectors in the line-up, Claude was the pick of the night, not that the others were not up to standard (they were all good), it was just that Claude had brought his ‘A’ game. His mixes were spot on and outside of Señor Daley’s 70s disco block, no one had the crowd hopping as he did.

The concept of Soul 2 Soul, as explained by Michael ‘Bonnie’ Godfrey, head of Classic Promtions, is one of the oldies which spawn only R&B, soul, disco, hip hop and jazz from the 50s through to the early 90s.

“All other oldies shows have a reggae influence, not that we are against reggae, but we feel that we should offer something different.”

Against this background, all the selectors stayed true to the theme save for Bunny Wailer’s Electric Boogie and a Jimmy Cliff song which found their way on the play list.

Stone Love’s We Pow had the early jugglin and was followed by Señor Daley of Klassique who really turned the heat up before handing over to Crazy Chris of KOOL FM. The first round was ended by Claude’s stint.

High-end liquor flowed from both bars and a number of industry personalities were on hand.

Now in its fourth year, Soul 2 Soul which began as a boat ride before shifting to Curphey Place in 2008 has now carved out a place on the calendar as a session with a difference.
