‘Every mickle mek a muckle’
It is always sad to see humans suffering. The devastation in Haiti has touched the hearts of the entire world and I am proud today to be a Jamaican as Jamaicans have stepped up and made donations to the effort to help our Haitian brothers. We as a nation have shown why we are so loved and respected worldwide.
Digicel’s Deal or no Deal has extended themselves to Jamaica and Jamaica has responded. One feature of this island that makes me proud to call it home is its diversity, the wealth of cultures and the dynamic inhabitants. In an effort to assist in Haitian recovery title sponsors Digicel has already donated US$5 million to the cause and that’s just the beginning.
While Haiti suffers we still have to remember that there are Jamaicans here who need money too and in tackling the issue locally, Digicel Deal or No Deal invited Mr Robert Chang last Wednesday to challenge for three million Jamaican dollars. Viewers not only got a chance to witness another exciting show but were given a little cultural lesson about Mr Chang’s Chinese customs and practices, some of which I believe are a little odd, but alas our peculiarities make us different and our differences make us a nation.
He began by selecting lucky Chinese number eight then gradually built up a momentum; naturally I tested his nerves and his faith with my first offer being a little over $19,000. He declined, somehow hoping that his lucky red shirt brought him some supernatural game winning talent which I found absolutely amusing.
After five more selections I doubled the offer still, No Deal. Then the overly confident Mr Chang started to play “My Game”, removing the top prize of $3 million and I decreased my offer in response.
So winding down to the final rounds he stood the chance of wining a maximum of $400, 000 only. I wouldn’t say I was forced to raise my offers; however, the thought of him going away with even that volume of money leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. Thankfully he made some more mistakes and with enough dangling and fear of going home with no money and even less pride he took the bait and accepted my deal for a $145,000. And a good choice at that, had he kept playing his Chinese luck would have given him the grand $1 prize.
Now that that is over I implore Jamaicans to donate whatever they can even if it’s a dollar to the Haitian cause as ‘every mickle mek a muckle’. Digicel has taken the lead and has given you a chance to easily contribute by just texting ‘126’ and 25 dollars will go directly to the Haitian effort.
