Cocktails With… Kemoy Reid
Featured in the superb documentary film RiseUP, up-and-coming singer Kemoy Reid has a certain on-camera innocence that adds an endearing quality. The ingénue is having cocktails with us at the Palace Cineplex; just moments after the first Jamaican audience viewed the film.
What are you sipping?
I’m having a glass of Champagne.
The film portrays you as a simple girl from the country with dreams of making it big, what’s the best thing about singing?
Singing really inspires me and every time I think about doing it, I just want to push harder to achieve my dream.
Socialite or homebody?
Most of the time, I am a home…my life in the country is very quiet and I like that.
You pride yourself in being a country girl, what do you love most about that kind of life?
You learn to do everything, how to keep house and it’s a really peaceful life.
You were the brightest star of RiseUP, what did you think of the film now that you’ve seen it?
I thought it was fabulous; it was a dream-come-true to see myself on the big screen.
Flats or stilettos?
I love heels… ever since I was a little girl, I loved to put on my mother’s and play dress up.
What’s your style?
I love to wear casual clothes: jeans and dresses.
What perfume are you spraying?
Taxi.
What projects are you currently working on?
This week I’m going to work on two new songs. And I’m looking at some heavy studio time, because I want to start working on my album.
What’s your idea of a perfect date?
Going somewhere fun with a guy who is charming and knows just how to talk to a woman.
What’s you’re idea of the perfect man?
He has to be ambitious and has to be versatile in terms of fitting in, in different places. He must be level-headed and knows what he wants from me and from his own life. He has to want more out of life than what he presently has.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
‘Keep doing the work that you are doing’ and ‘never give up’.
And 10 years from now?
Releasing more songs, albums and touring the world.
