Hot summer… Cool hair!
Karlene's micro-tie braids can be worn in an updo to keep the hair away from her face and neck.

Hot summer… Cool hair!

Haircare during these sweltering days and nights can be a real challenge. A sure way to beat the heat while looking effortlessly fab is by trying different hairstyles.

Under the Dryer collaborated with expert hairstylist Kizzy-Ann Brown of Klub Klippers Beauty & Barber Salon to show you a few trendy ways to beat the summer heat.

The results are pretty cool.

Karlene Mills – Micro-twist braids

Karlene wears her hair very short, but finds that this requires a lot of maintenance, especially during the summer when the heat causes the scalp to sweat more than usual. A fresh new look is what she craves.

Kizzy Ann’s solution:

Kizzy-Ann decides on a micro-tie braid for Karlene — similar to the micro-braiding technique. The stylist twists fine locks of hair as opposed to making plaits or cornrows. Technicians can use either straight or curly hair.

Karlene’s take:

Love at first sight.

Janella Johnson – A chic bob

Janella wants a hip hairstyle for the summer that flatters. Stylist Kizzy-Ann chooses a chic bob — a look that maintains her youthful aura and easily transitions from day to evening.

Here are the steps she took:

Kizzy-Ann first relaxes Janella’s hair with Crème of Nature Professional Sunflower and Coconut Oil Conditioning Crème Relaxer. This is followed by the bridge system (which allows Janella to relax and colour her hair in one go). Her hair is then dyed using a mixture of Adore Plus Extra Conditioning Semi-Permanent Colour in Jet Black and Phoenix Professional Max@Mum Conditioning Semi-Permanent Colour Lotion in Russet Rage. After a thorough shampoo and treatment the stylist wraps Janella’s hair and places her under the dryer. A dollop of Hawaiian Silky Herbal Touch My Hair Thickening Lotion is then worked through Janella’s tresses before a few rows of extensions are added and the hair is flat-ironed. To complete the look, Kizzy-Ann then cuts Janella’s hair in a shapely bob and spritzes it with African Pride Miracle Sheen Oil Sheen.

Tashana Briscoe – Flirty flips

Tashana is eager to change her look to suit her new teaching job without compromising her sass. Stylist Kizzy-Ann gives her a mature, yet flirty ‘do.

Kizzy-Ann’s take:

Kizzy-Ann first shampooes Janella’s her hair with Hawaiian Silky Herbal Neutralising Shampoo and Dry Hair Conditioner before giving her a trim and set. After her hair is dried, Kizzy-Ann lightly spritzes it with Hawaiian Silky 4-in-1 Miracle Worker hair spray and uses a barrel-heated iron to create flirty, face-flattering flips.

Kizzy-Ann uses the barrel-heated curling iron to craft ‘flirty flips’.

Alecia Gouldbourne – ‘Glamorous summer bounce’

Alecia also wants to give her hair a break for the summer period, but she still wants to look glamorous. She is not fond of braids so Kizzy-Ann gives her a weave using Indian Remy and shows her how to style it in ‘long, loose curls with lots of bounce’.

The procedure:

Kizzy-Ann uses a barrel-heated curling iron to craft ‘large, loose curls with lots of bounce’ to suit the shape of Alecia’s face, advising her to finger-curl her hair and pile it atop her head when she’s at home, using curling pins to secure it. This will help to maintain her ‘bouncy curls’. She also spritzes her hair with African Pride Miracle Sheen Oil Sheen for an additional boost.

Dalila Bryden – World o’ curls

The summer heat means frequent hair processing for Dalila — a definite negative because it’s expensive. Dalila also wants to ‘spice up’ her look. The knowledgeable stylist decided on a weave and opts for a Body Wave – which is wavy and voluminous — as opposed to the more popular straight hair weaves.

Kizzy-Ann’s take:

After completing Dalila’s weave, Kizzy-Ann gives her a pin curl to maintain the curls, explaining to our Under the Dryer team that wavy hair is easier to maintain than straight hair because, unlike straight hair which goes flat after a while and loses curls easily, wavy hair maintains curls longer without much maintenance. Needless to say, Dalila is more than happy with the finished style.

Christina Bennett – Sophisticated semi-updo

Christina’s hair is natural and curly, but she was eager to try something new with it… nothing too risqué, of course.

The Procedure:

Since Christina doesn’t use shampoo, Kizzy-Ann rinsed her hair with a little Hawaiian Silky Dry Hair Conditioner to detangle the curls before giving her a ‘roll-blow’, which is blow-drying the hair with a round brush. After this, she styles it using a barrel-heated curling iron, then makes a slight side part, extracting a lock of hair, which she curls and pins back towards the rest of her hair. She then twists her hair downwards and secures it with curling pins – creating a rather sophisticated semi-updo.
