Top execs give helpful advice to young professionals
THE guests at the inaugural NCB Your Money eZine Business Summit were treated to a discussion that involved two of the brightest minds in Jamaica.
Christopher Williams, CEO of investment company Proven, provided insight into his decisions to venture into entrepreneurship while Island Car Rentals boss Michael Campbell shared gems of wisdom gleaned from his five decades of entrepreneurship.
Moderated by editor of Your Money eZine and newly appointed vice-president of eZines, Andre Burnett, the discussion varied between instances of advice to moments of humour, while always punctuated by the need for everyone to continually seek self-improvement for the betterment of the country.
Williams emphasised that though he had been a career man, his quest for excellence outgrew what was there for him in corporate Jamaica and only entrepreneurship could provide the necessary challenge for him. He also made it clear that the start of his business was aided by the fact that he had made such a wonderful reputation for himself by excelling in all the positions he had ever been appointed to. The nods of approval from the many young professionals in the audience showed that Williams’ point had been made. “What we need in Jamaica are people who strive to be the best at whatever they do”, said Williams, “no matter how small the job”.
Campbell agreed with much of Williams’ sentiments but having beEN a career entrepreneur, his experience differed somewhat. He told the story of how he acquired his company, Island Car Rentals.
“One of my mantras is one that has guided me throughout my life,” said Campbell. “We are constantly faced with opportunities, brilliantly disguised as insolvable problems.”
He spoke authoritatively about the responsibilities of an entrepreneur to look out for those employed to him and the pressure that can result. At times during the discussion he used visual aids to emphasise his points, such as “A wise man knows everything but an astute man knows everyone”, which had guests murmuring in agreement.
