The seven contestants bring the heat

The seven contestants bring the heat

This week on Digicel Rising Stars

The superior seven showed us what they were working with on medley night, coming out in their hottest outfits, and bringing they’re roaring voices and rocking dance moves with them.

Narrowly escaping last week, both Travaune Ming and Phylea Carly were again in the bottom two this week. Travaune, unfortunately, no longer had lady luck on his side and was sadly sent home. However Judge Anthony ‘Killer’ Miller, was nothing short of excited during the elimination segment of the show, when he said “Trevaune, thanks for being a good sport, but it’s time to go!”

Miller who slaughtered all the contestants at last week’s show, was in an unexpectedly good mood this week as he tried his hardest to dish out positive comments; thought by most to be the product of the departure of ‘Ming the Merciless’.

The Intense Chica Pepita held down the Chill Room this week with her guest host, local recording artiste I-Octane, whose songs like Mama You Alone and Lose A Friend are currently blowing up the air waves. Joining them in the Chill Room was DJ Rush on the ones and threes, and with the Word from the Streets of Cross Roads was the foxy Kimone.

Outstanding Performances

This week, all seven contestants gave it their best, with some finally unlocking their true voices while others finally found the right songs. But three contestants outshone the rest, bringing the total package to the competition.

Phylea’s Lady Gaga medley was little short of show-stopping. Hitting all of her high notes and bringing the appropriate theatrics to the stage, she did more than justice to Gaga’s Poker Face, Bad Romance and Paparazzi. And though her voice slightly wavered in the end, it did not stop her from getting a standing ovation from the audience and all positive comments from the three judges. Miller complemented her for bring theatrics to her performance, expressing how much he had enjoyed himself, and after joking about waiting to see Alejandro step on stage, Judge Clyde McKenzie said more seriously “There were problems towards the end, but that was a Gaga performance!”

Giving Beyonce her best shot, Toni Blair wowed both the judges and the audience with her rendition of the singer’s Smash Into You and De Javu. Finally picking the right songs to complement her voice, Judge Nadine Sutherland congratulated her, saying “Welcome back Toni! … I hate to see an A class singer singing C class songs.”

While Anthony kept it honest and straight to the point, saying “You exerted yourself, you worked a bit harder and found some songs that worked for you, I think you did pretty well tonight.”

But Jermaine took the show this week, after his performance of Usher’s You Got it Bad, and N’syncs Gone, he stopped the hearts of the females in the audience, who in turn screamed throughout his performance. His standing ovation at the end of his set was well deserved! Nadine fully supported her Wild Card when she said: “Your voice has a unique presence… there is a humility in your spirit… you’re getting better every week!” Anthony, agreeing, complemented him on his nice transitions, adding “Good crowd pleasing songs… I see you coming out of your shell, but you have to come out more.”

Fashion

The contestants really flaunted their all this week, showing what true fashionistas they can be! The two guys left in the competition, looked their ‘flyest’ in futuristic blazers with matching pants and T’shirts. The ladies, burned up the stage in their eye-catching outfits. Notable was Phylea’s red hot patent leather pumps with fishnet leggings and a grey off shoulder blouse with white lace cross appliqué, and Latoya’s bad girl get up, in an oriental blue silk bustier, mini acid wash jeans shorts and fishnets with black ankle booties, and her au natural Mohawk. Also making the cut was Toni’s micro mini, glittered, black dress and Camaley’s grey vest and studded belt over her black jumper.

Judges comments

Whether it was because all the contestants did notably well or the Killer Miller was in an unbelievably good mood, the searing comments usually dished out were kept to a minimum this week.

After Latoya’s Rihanna medley, all three judges thought she did ok, but could have done better, with Miller stating “Three Rihanna songs is too many. You only appeal to one constituency out there… you need to pitch other songs to another audience.”

And after Camaley’s friendly pop medley of Billionaire, Firefly and Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours did little to impress the judges, Miller said plainly “There was nothing to get excited about, there was no electricity, it made no impact.”

Among the friendlier of the note worthy comments were:

“Lady Gaga is an oversized sort of character; you’re not the tiny package yourself… I just really enjoyed myself!” an ecstatic Miller said to Phylea after her performance. Then later after Nekorah’s Reggae Medley which included Maka Diamond’s Hug Up Yuh Pillow, he said coyly “Nekorah, you were a very naughty girl tonight!”

Tune in to TVJ this Sunday at 8:00 pm to see who makes it into the Top 6.
