IOC to study eliminating fireworks from ceremonies
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will study proposals to eliminate fireworks from the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics for environmental reasons.
IOC President Jacques Rogge says, “I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but we are going to study it in a very serious way”.
Sri Lanka’s national Olympic committee yesterday proposed eliminating fireworks to reduce harmful emissions. The committee said laser shows could replace fireworks.
Rogge said the IOC would raise the matter with its environment commission and games’ organisers. He asked the Sri Lankans for more information on the carbon footprint of fireworks.
London Olympic organisers said they haven’t yet discussed fireworks for the 2012 ceremonies.
