Reno leapfrog Sporting with narrow win
TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Reno FC rebounded from their mid-week loss to Harbour View a deserved 1-0 win over Sporting Central Academy in their Digicel Premier League fixture at Brancourt yesterday.
Former national player Obrian Woodbine struck the winner on 22 minutes with a brilliantly-taken free-kick from just about 19 yards out which left Tristan Huntley stone dead.
In other games up to press time, Waterhouse, through a hat trick from Vincent Earle, stopped St George’s SC 3-1; Humble Lion edged Village United 1-0; Boys’ Town and Portmore United ended 1-1 in the first of a double header at the Tony Spaulding Sports Complex, and Benfica surprised Harbour View 1-0 at the Compound.
The victory saw Reno move one place ahead of Sporting Central on 14 points and coach Wendell Downswell thinks it a comfortable position for now.
“I thought it was a hard-fought game, but I’m happy with the fact that we played for 90 minutes and never gave up a goal,” he said. “Offensively we could have been better, but at this point we’re pretty satisfied with the performance of the team, knowing that there’s still a possibility that we could make the end-of-round-final.”
Despite playing on a soggy pitch, the Westmoreland team never seemed to mind as they reacted quicker to most first balls, looked more constructive in attack and managed to keep out everything their host threw at them.
Sporting, playing without three of their regular starters, were uncharacteristically lethargic going forward and only looked like finding the net in the dying moments from a set-play, but were thwarted by a nine-man Reno wall.
