Draw denies Wolmer’s Walker Cup berth
Wolmer’s Boys were denied a place in this season’s Corporate Area schoolboy football Walker Cup Knockout competition after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Edith Dalton James in their Group E ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup match at Edith Dalton James school ground yesterday.
Jason Wright fired the visitors ahead in the 16th minute, but a spectacular strike from captain Kenardo Gordon on the hour earned his team a share of the points.
Both teams also ended with 10 players after Edith Dalton’s Kishawn Thompson and Wolmer’s Wright were ejected in time added for violent conduct.
Wolmer’s coach Ludlow Bernard, although disappointed at not making the knockout competition, was satisfied to be in the second round of the Manning Cup.
“The major objective has been achieved and that is to qualify for the next round of the Manning Cup. The Walker Cup is a bonus, but this may be a blessing in disguise because the last time Wolmer’s won the Manning Cup we did not make the Walker Cup,” he said.
The visitors made a great start as they took the lead after just 16 minutes when Wright fired home from inside the box.
However, 15 minutes after the interval the home team was back on even terms when captain Gordon blasted an unstoppable shot from 40 yards that gave Jason Lewis in goal no chance.
The result left Wolmer’s five points adrift of leaders St George’s College, who came from a goal down to beat St Jago 4-2 to stay atop the points standing on 33 points.
In the group’s other game, Spanish Town High slammed Donald Quarrie 9-1.
Meanwhile, In Group A, Waterford defeated Cumberland 4-0 through a brace from Romaine Gibbon and one each from Andre McFarlane and Rohan Bailey to join Jamaica College at the top of the table on 22 points.
Both teams look set to qualify for the Walker Cup from this group and will meet in the group decider tomorrow. The next best second-placed team will come from either Group C or D.
The Group A match between St Andrew College and Papine High was not played.
