FOUR individuals were honoured at the 25th annual Bell/Ziadie Memorial Extravaganza sponsored by NCB Visa Card following the double header at Winchester Park on Heroes Day, Monday, October 18.

The four include Harold Murray, Ainsley Sharpe, Owen Parker and Bruce Lyn.

Murray, who in 1959 was influential in the decision which allowed youth clubs to participate in the Division Two football competition, was a founding member of KSAFA and served on the first executive

body chosen.

He has influenced many other Jamaican sportsmen, including Lawrence ‘Yagga’ Rowe and Desmond Lewis, former members of the West Indies cricket team.

Sharpe is a former FIFA referee; Lyn is a St George’s College Old Boy and former Manning Cup player, and Owen is a former Jamaica/YMCA footballer and member of the 1958 West Indies football team.

This latest list of honourees brings the total to 73 so recognised by organiser Clive ‘Busy’ Campbell throughout the years, in the categories of footballers, past president of the JFF, FIFA referees, St George’s College Old Boys and administrators.

The Extravaganza is a celebration and recognition of the lives of former Jamaican national footballers and coaches, Jackie Bell and Dennis Ziadie, both of whom died tragically in a motor vehicle accident while attending the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico.

It is also a charity event with proceeds going in aid of several basic schools throughout the island, including the Feed My Sheep Basic School and the Special Olympics unit.

In the first of the double header, the Media Invitational XI blanked a Sponsors Invitational XI 4-0, with the feature game between Masters, Celebrities and Entertainers and the St George’s College Old Boys Invitational Team ended 2-2.
