Ramnarine returned unopposed as WIPA head
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) — Combative West Indies Players Association (WIPA) head Dinanath Ramnarine has been re-elected unopposed as president.
In a move that was widely expected, the former West Indies leg-spinner once again managed to secure the overwhelming confidence of the players’ union membership, at the annual general meeting held during the WICB One-Day Championship in Jamaica last month.
Ramnarine, who also serves as WIPA’s chief executive, was first elected back in 2002 when he took over from West Indies fast bowling legend Courtney Walsh.
Discarded West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds was also re-elected unopposed as vice-president.
Meanwhile, Jamaican fast bowler Andrew Richardson has replaced Jimmy Adams as secretary, while Trinidadian leg-spinner Samuel Badree will serve as his assistant, replacing fellow countryman Daren Ganga.
Ramnaresh Sarwan, overlooked for the recent tour of Sri Lanka, has taken over from Ian Bradshaw as treasurer.
WIPA said, however, that despite the departure of Adams and Ganga, the duo would continue to serve in other capacities in the organisation.
During his report, Ramnarine urged members to remain vigilant in the face of many challenges, some of which “threatened the interests and welfare of members and, at times, the fabric of the organisation”.
The membership also congratulated new West Indies captain Darren Sammy on his appointment and thanked Chris Gayle for his three-year tenure.
