Champs St Hugh’s grace netball second round
REIGNING champions The Queen’s and St Hugh’s, current holders of the respective Junior and Senior titles, will look to continue their unbeaten run as the second round of the Digicel/ISSA Urban Area netball competitions continue this morning at the Leila Robinson Courts at 10 o’clock.
The Queen’s, who are also defending All-Island Junior champions, were winners of Zone “F”, while St Hugh’s won Zone “A” of the preliminary rounds.
St Hugh’s have so far won five games in both the Senior League, while The Queen’s drew one match in the seniors.
Junior champions The Queen’s will face Camperdown at 10:00 am today, while St Hugh’s face Bridgeport in the Senior League at 12:10 pm.
Phillip St Marie, coach of St Hugh’s, said he won’t be taking any team lightly as this is the second round and the matches will be tougher.
St Hugh’s will be playing St Catherine in the Junior League at 10:45 am and should also start on a winning note.
Meanwhile, Marvette Anderson, coach of The Queen’s, said: “My group, in the second round, will be very competitive and all the teams are either winners or runners-up of their respective zones from the preliminary rounds.
“I’ve not seen any of the teams in my second group in action, or even other teams in action, apart from the teams I’ve played in the preliminary stage. However, I’ll be taking each match one at a time and hoping to continue my winning streak,” Anderson said.
Meanwhile, the unbeaten schools in the Junior League are the Jennifer Brown-coached St Andrew; St Catherine, coached by Joan Walker; and the Lorraine Miller-coached newcomers Hydel.
The unbeaten schools in the Senior League are St Andrew High, coached Jennifer Brown; The Queen’s, coached by Anderson; the Cicele Knight-coached Tarrant; the Delroy Johnson-coached Holy Childhood, and Bridgeport High, coached by Christopher Smart.
The other games scheduled in the Juniors are: Vauxhall vs St Jago; St Andrew vs Meadowbrook; Mona vs Wolmer’s Girls at 10:00 am; Hydel vs Excelsior at 10:45 am.
Other Senior League games are: Vauxhall vs Haile Selassie at 10:45 am; St Andrew vs St Andrew Technical; Alpha vs Wolmer’s at 11:30 am; Tarrant vs Holy Childhood at 12:10 pm.
Teams and their respective groups are: JUNIORS: GROUP 1 — The Queen’s, St Andrew, Vauxhall, Camperdown, St Jago, and Meadowbrook. GROUP 2 – St Hugh’s, Wolmer’s, Mona, St Catherine, Excelsior and Hydel.
SENIORS: GROUP 1 – The Queen’s, Vauxhall, St Andrew, Camperdown, St Andrew Technical (STATHS), Haile Selassie. GROUP 2 — St Hugh’s, Wolmer’s, Bridgeport, Holy Childhood, Tarrant and Alpha.
