Rusea’s, Glenmuir shoe-in for quarters
HAYES, Clarendon — Group Two leaders Rusea’s, along with Glenmuir and Garvey Maceo from Groups Five and Six, respectively, are a point away from securing quarter-final berths in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup competition after notching their second consecutive Inter-zone wins yesterday.
Eight-time winners Rusea’s followed up on their 4-0 whipping of Spot Valley High last Wednesday with a 5-0 thrashing of St Mary Technical at Jarrett Park to increase their tally to six points.
Glenmuir, behind a hat-trick from National Under-20 striker Paul Wilson, defeated Buff Bay 5-1, while Garvey Maceo downed Titchfield High, 3-0.
Meanwhile, reigning champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) revived their campaign to register back-back titles after edging past former Group Four leaders Clarendon College 2-1 in Santa Cruz.
The Andrew Edwards-conditioned STETHS now sit atop the pool on four points, but are being closely policed by Grange Hill High (three points), who blanked Spalding 2-0 at Frome. Clarendon College remain on three points.
Old Harbour High also put themselves back into contention for a place in the last eight by avenging their 1-2 defeat to beaten Ben Francis Knock-out finalists Paul Bogle with a 3-1 win at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
The St Catherine school assumed second place in Group Six on three points — the same as Titchfield, but with a better goal difference.
The race for Group One honours remains a keen battle as former champions St James High were held to a 2-2 draw by Marcus Garvey Technical.
The two teams are now level atop the group on four points, and are being hotly pursued by Frome Technical (three points), who stopped St Mary High 2-1.
Last year’s beaten finalists Manchester High have a lot of ground to make up if they are to at least repeat that feat after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mannings Schools.
Both teams are five points adrift of runaway leaders Lennon High, who spanked Munro College 5-1 in their reschedule encounter on Friday.
