Excelsior, Manley score wins
Excelsior High and Norman Manley scored added-time wins against Tivoli Gardens and Wolmer’s Boys’, respectively, to share the early lead atop Group Three, as the second round of the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup football competition continued at the Constant Spring Complex yesterday.
Dean Phillips scored Norman Manley’s winner from the penalty spot, in their win over 10-man Wolmer’s, while Neco Brett scored twice to give Excelsior a 2-1 win over Tivoli Gardens.
The feature game between Wolmer’s and Norman Manley was an entertaining affair with both teams creating good opportunities in the first-half.
Wolmer’s had good attempts at goal through Vance Rookwood, while Norman Manley’s playmaker Phillips created a good opening for Chevar Valentine and Neico Reynolds.
Captain Desmond Campbell had a great chance for Wolmer’s in the second half, but he hesitated before releasing a weak shot at Edwards.
Norman Manley also went when a good delivery from Phillips from a set-piece found Andrew Thomas and Reshawn Lewis unmarked inside the area, but the two got in each other’s way for the easy header.
With the game heading for a draw, Jason Cross made a reckless challenge on Lamar Thompson and was penalised for the high boot on the striker.
Phillips confidently dispatched the spot-kick to give his team the win.
Earlier, in a lacklustre affair, Brett put Excelsior ahead after 38 minutes when he latched onto a pass from Juvanne Benjamin and fired past Jazeel McBridge in goal.
However, captain Barrington Pryce restored parity a minute before half-time with a speculative free-kick from 45 yards.
Then in time added captain Brett beat the offside trap and fired a low shot past McBridge to secure all three points.
The competition continues today with games at the Spanish Town Prison Oval.
In the opening game at 1:00 pm, Charlie Smith take on St Andrew Technical, while at 3:00 pm Eltham face Waterford in the feature match.
