Morgan, Harriot and Parks for Studio 38 today

THREE gifted entertainers with national recognition for their long service to Jamaican music are set to perform at Studio 38 in New Kingston today.

Dubbed “Genuine Gold”, the event is expected to feature Derrick Morgan , Derrick Harriot and Lloyd Parks.

Derrick Morgan, one of ska’s founding fathers, emerging alongside pioneers like Skatalities Band, Rico Rodriguez, Laurel Aitken, Prince Buster, and Byron Lee and the Dragonaires.

Singer/producer Derrick Harriot, after teaming up with his Excelsior High School classmates to form Jiving Juniors in the late 1950s, embarked on a solo career in the early 1960s. Like Morgan, Harriot has over time enjoyed a slew of hit recordings.

Lloyd Parks started singing in the late sixties with Studio One. After a duo album with Wentworth Vernon, he then did a few recordings with the Techniques before going solo. His solo anthem is the 1970-released Officially.

According to Parks, after that, his bass guitar kept him away from singing for a time. That led to the formation of his We The People Band, one of the leading backing aggregations for the past several years. Today, he is among the top bass players in reggae.

“Today, our reggae music has declined tremendously in more ways than one. The sweet melody has gone. We need music that can be played in the homes that parents and children can sing and enjoy. Right now in Europe ska is taking over again,” Parks lamented.

“This is a series of things I am doing with the main objective to keep reggae music alive,” added the popular bandleader with a new single called Loverman taken from a soon-to-released album.
