Opposition calls for urgent action on campaign financing
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) is calling on the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) led administration to take urgent action to promulgate regulations to give effect to the campaign finance law which was legislated a year ago.
Leader of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives, Phillip Paulwell during his presentation in the Sectoral Debate in Parliament yesterday, made an observation that despite having bi-partisan support the relevant regulations are not yet before Parliament.Paulwell observed that the legislation governs how individuals and organisations can contribute to political parties and candidates, as well as the fact that it contains stipulations for the disclosure of contributions as well as penalties for false and/or non-disclosure.He reminded the House that the new law was based on the need to bolster the transparency and accountability of elected officials.“Importantly, it embraces the principle that elections must reflect the will of the people and that political power must not bought or sold”, he emphasised.
