KINGSTON, Jamaica— The National Water Commission (NWC) is reminding customers that, by law and distinct from other utility debts, water supply debts are tied to the land and remain due and payable to the NWC regardless of who may have used the water and caused the debt to be incurred or when it was incurred.

In a release today, the NWC explained that landowners and purchasers in particular should exercise due care in seeing to the payment of water bills charged against their property, even if the property is occupied by others, as ultimate responsibility rests with the property and does not have a time limit.

According to the NWC’s corporate public relations department, the commission is seeking to remind customers of this fact as it seeks to intensify debt collections efforts in the New Year.

The NWC said it aims to increase its revenue collections through a range of improved activities including incentives and rewards for on-time payment; special welcome back initiatives; more convenient payment options; increased bill payment reminders; quicker and more effective bill delivery; more efficient metering; more aggressive prosecution of delinquents and other court action against persons and properties owing sums to the commission.
