KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaicans were on edge Tuesday night after one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Caribbean in modern times struck off the coast of Honduras, setting off tsunami warnings for several islands.

The warnings were cancelled about an hour later but many Jamaicans felt there was insufficient warning on the part of local authorities.

In response, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management on Wednesday sought to assure that it is actively rolling out warning systems across the island.

The United States categorised Jamaica as ‘Level 2’ on its new travel advisory scale published Wednesday, warning Americans to “exercise increased caution” when travelling to the island due to the high crime rate.

And the Independent Commission of Investigations has launched investigations into the killing of five civilians in separate incidents by the police on Wednesday and Thursday.
