ST ANN, Jamaica — Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Berris Williams has called on political representatives to support the police not only with words, but in actions.

Speaking at the St Ann Municipal Corporation general monthly meeting yesterday, DSP Williams, head of operations in St Ann, said everyone should work together to ensure law and order.

“If we are saying move the vendors, we want everyone to be saying the same thing,” DSP Williams said.

Williams, who was giving a report on the crime situation in the parish, said the police have been focusing on bringing a sense of control in Ocho Rios, which accounted for 26 of the 60 murders reported in St Ann in 2017.

He said the majority of the killings were stabbing incidents and the police are aiming to bring law and order to the town. Activities include removing vendors from no-vending areas and getting public transportation to use the transportation centre.

He said law and order in Ocho Rios was not only important to crime management but also important to the economy.

While the aim is to get people to use the transportation centre, DSP Williams nonetheless argued that the centre needed improvements. He called on the Municipal Corporation to look at increasing lighting and improving infrastructure in the bus park.

In the meantime, DSP Williams said the St Ann police have seen a reduction in crimes since the start of the year. Renae Dixon
