KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) is imploring motorists travelling eastbound along Spanish Town Road in the vicinity of the Sandy Gully Bridge to exercise extreme caution and patience when exiting the bridge.

The agency said it had to move swiftly over the recent holiday to excavate a section of the Bridge’s eastern approach road to ascertain the reason for its unexpected failure.

This has affected the flow of traffic along the corridor and so motorists should be prepared for an increase in their travel time throughout the course of today.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said the reason for the failure has been identified as a leaking sewer main, maintained by a private sewer treatment company.

Shaw said the area will have to be excavated to a depth of some 15 feet to allow for permanent repairs to be carried out on the broken sewer main following which the roadway will be reinstated.

In light of this, the NWA is advising the motoring public that the eastbound lanes along Spanish Town Road will have to be closed in the vicinity of the Sandy Gully Bridge between 8:00pm today (Thursday, February 15) and 5:00 am tomorrow morning.

During the period of works motorists may use Weymouth Drive to access Washington Boulevard then on to Molynes Road or Constant Spring Road depending on their final destination.
