Montague invites Opposition to discuss UC Rusal operations
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Transport and Mining, Robert Montague, has invited the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) to discuss the United States’ sanctions on Russian companies and individuals, specifically as it relates to the operations of UC Rusal/ Windalco in Jamaica.
Montague indicated in his letter to the Opposition that he would be seeking a united approach to the issue, as the Government moves proactively to safeguard the welfare of the approximately 1200 workers at WINDALCO and their dependents.
The ministry said it has conducted a series of consultations to include UC Rusal, the Attorney General, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the US Embassy and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security so far.
Workers or their representatives will also be consulted.
The ministry has assured that it will do all it can to protect the jobs of the workers as well as the milk and beef supplies from the farming operations of WINDALCO.
