Gov’t seeks waiver amidst US sanctions on UC Rusal
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Transport and Mining Minister Robert Montague says the Government will be intensifying discussions with the US Treasury to secure a waiver for Jamaica amidst the US sanctions on Russian aluminium giant UC Rusal, such that the Jamaican economy is not negatively impacted.
Montague, who was providing an update to the House of Representatives today, said that the banking sectors are also being engaged to ensure that bauxite company, Windalco, majority-owned by the Russian company, has the sector’s support.
This comes after allegations last week that local and overseas banks are refusing to do business with the company.
The minister also cautioned individuals from taking advantage of the situation.
“This crisis is not of our making, but as a government we are rising to the challenge and are working for a sustainable solution. In the meantime, no one needs to “cry wolf” or seek to take any advantage of this unfortunate situation,” expressed Montague.
He reiterated that the Government remains committed to applying best efforts to protect the interest of the community and the country.
“We particularly want to protect the workers, the environment and revenue to Jamaica,” said Montague.
