Section of Marcus Garvey Drive to close next Tuesday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists that the southbound lane of Marcus Garvey Drive, between Three Miles and Ashenheim Road, is to be closed as of next Tuesday to facilitate the laying of a new sewer main.
The sewer works along this section of the roadway are scheduled to last for eight weeks.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said in a release that the work will be undertaken by the National Water Commission (NWC) and forms part of the larger Hagley Park Road Improvement project.
The NWA said as a result of the closure, there will be no direct access to Marcus Garvey Drive for motorists travelling from either sides of Spanish Town Road or Hagley Park Road.
It outlined that traffic transiting through Three Miles, heading onto Marcus Garvey Drive should travel along Spanish Town Road (in the direction of Downtown Kingston); turn onto Development Road, then onto Ashenheim Road and exit onto Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of Pure National Ice Company.
A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Spanish Town Road and Development Road to assist with traffic flow.
The new travel arrangement will function as a one-way during the afternoon peak hours of 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm to facilitate motorists travelling towards Portmore, NWA said.
Shaw is reminding road users who regularly use the Three Miles area, and its environs, that the area continues to be an active work zone and traffic delays are likely to occur even with the changes.
He said the agency continues to assess the impact of the work on traffic and will make necessary changes as the work progresses.
Motorists and pedestrians are being advised to exercise extreme caution while traversing the construction zone and to obey the instructions of flag persons and posted warning signs.
