Tasting De Sangre by Luigi Bosca

Luigi Bosca’s De Sangre line offers a story of passion, heritage, and terroir that has been carefully and thoughtfully crafted into every sip, revealing the very soul of Argentina. This experience is an embodiment of the Arizu family’s century-long legacy of winemaking excellence. Each bottle is a masterwork, representing the pinnacle of Mendoza’s world-renowned vineyards and the intricate artistry of blending. From their lush De Sangre White Blend to the expressive De Sangre Malbec DOC Luján de Cuyo, and the audacious De Sangre Cabernet Franc, this collection invites you to embark on a sensory journey through Argentina’s most iconic wine regions.

Recently, Thursday Food accepted the invitation to an exclusive, sommelier-guided, tasting experience in Buenos Aires where we were introduced to three labels from the De Sangre line along with a signature espumante. The De Sangre label, meaning “of blood,” is deeply symbolic as it pays homage to the Arizu family’s winemaking heritage, built on dedication and passion passed down through generations. Luigi Bosca, one of Argentina’s most venerable bodegas, crafted this line to showcase the finest expressions of their terroirs. With vineyards nestled in Mendoza’s prestigious subregions, including Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley, each wine in the De Sangre line captures the essence of its origin while reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with Luigi Bosca.

From its beginnings in 1901, the Arizu family’s commitment to innovation and tradition has positioned Luigi Bosca as a beacon of Argentine winemaking. The De Sangre line emerged as a tribute to the family’s most cherished creations, wines that were originally reserved for intimate family gatherings. Today, this collection represents their enduring pursuit of excellence, offering wine lovers a window into the heart of Argentina’s viticultural identity. Today we revisit the De Sangre line, along with an espumante, as well as explore the ideal pairings for each label:

The De Sangre White Blend represents the marriage of select varietals, each contributing unique characteristics to the wine. The careful balance of Chardonnay, Semillón, and Sauvignon Blanc ensures a multilayered tasting experience. This blend is a celebration of the Uco Valley’s high-altitude vineyards, where cool nights and sunny days yield grapes of exceptional quality and freshness.

Pale gold in colour with subtle green highlights, this blend glimmers with clarity, hinting at its freshness. A complex bouquet of white peaches, citrus blossoms, and honeydew melon intertwined with delicate notes of jasmine and flint, caresses the nose. On the palate, it offers vibrant acidity and an elegant structure, exhibiting flavours of ripe stone fruits, lime zest, and a whisper of vanilla from partial oak ageing which create a harmonious and lingering finish. This wine can be paired with seared scallops, grilled asparagus, or a creamy lemon risotto to complement its bright, mineral-driven profile.

As Argentina’s flagship varietal, De Sangre Malbec finds its quintessential expression in the Luján de Cuyo DOC, the first Denomination of Controlled Origin in the Americas. The region’s clay and alluvial soils, combined with its high altitude, create the ideal environment for producing Malbecs of unparalleled depth and character. The De Sangre Malbec DOC Luján de Cuyo is a tribute to this heritage, showcasing the elegance and power of this iconic varietal.

With its deep ruby colour and violet hues, this Malbec exhibits remarkable intensity and brilliance. Aromatic notes of ripe plums, blackberries, and blueberries dominate, accented by hints of mocha, cloves, and tobacco from its time in French oak. Full-bodied and velvety, it delivers flavours of dark fruits, cocoa, and a touch of licorice in addition to having supple tannins that lead to a long, complex finish that is both robust and refined. Perfect with Argentine asado, lamb shank, or rich mushroom-based dishes, this Malbec enhances bold, savoury flavours.

Cabernet Franc is often overshadowed by its more robust counterparts, but in the hands of Luigi Bosca, it takes centre stage. The grapes for this wine are sourced from meticulously managed vineyards in the Uco Valley, where the cooler climate enhances the varietal’s natural aromatics and acidity. This wine exemplifies the potential of Cabernet Franc in Argentina, offering a fresh and refined alternative to heavier reds.

De Sangre Cabernet Franc has a vivid garnet red colour with garnet reflections at the rim. It is expressive and aromatic, featuring red cherries, bell peppers, and subtle herbal notes, complemented by hints of cedar and spices. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins in the mouth, this Cabernet Franc presents red currants, dried herbs, and a touch of white pepper. The finish is fresh and balanced, showcasing its varietal purity making it ideal with roasted pork tenderloin, duck confit, or herbed goat cheese, a versatility that makes it a perfect choice for intricate culinary pairings.

Sparkling wines, or espumantes as they are known here, are a cornerstone of Argentina’s winemaking tradition, and Luigi Bosca’s Extra Brut is a shining example. Crafted using the traditional Champenoise method, this wine combines Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to deliver a sparkling experience that is both elegant and approachable. Its vibrant acidity and persistent bubbles make it a versatile choice for any occasion, from casual brunches to sophisticated soirées.

Luigi Bosca Extra Brut is bright straw-yellow in colour with fine, persistent bubbles. On the nose, aromas of green apples, citrus peel, and toasted almonds mingle with hints of brioche, revealing its elegant complexity. The palate is crisp and refreshing, with flavours of lemon curd, pear, and a delicate nuttiness in addition to its refined effervescence, leading to a clean and vibrant finish. This sparkling wine pairs beautifully with oysters, smoked salmon, or a creamy Brie, making it perfect for celebratory moments.

Luigi Bosca’s De Sangre line is more than a collection of wines; it is an invitation to experience the heart of Argentina’s winemaking legacy, as it transports you to the sun-drenched landscapes of Mendoza, where tradition meets innovation in every glass.
