Fresh, New Creations at Broken Plate

Broken Plate has long been a beloved staple of Kingston’s dining scene, but with the debut of its new menu, the restaurant has undeniably raised the bar. From the moment of entry, you’re welcomed into an atmosphere that effortlessly blends contemporary sophistication with a sense of warmth and ease. The room hums with lively energy, the crowd is engaged, and the service is nothing short of stellar. Attentive and knowledgeable, the staff, under the guidance of Chef Damion Stewart, brings a level of hospitality that elevates the entire experience.

But let’s get to the heart of it: The food. The new offerings are a bold departure, bursting with creativity, precision, and a keen understanding of flavour. Each dish is thoughtfully curated and plated with a visual elegance that speaks to the kitchen’s meticulous attention to detail.

Joined by guest judge Everton and guest Da’nielle, we curated our own tasting session, opting for a communal approach to explore a range of dishes: The chopped sandwich, pork belly sandwich, fish and chips sandwich, pork belly bowl with quinoa, teriyaki salmon bowl with rice, and the tofu bowl. The table became a shared canvas of flavours and textures, each bite more intriguing than the last.

The Aviary, however, was the unexpected show-stopper. Quite possibly my new favourite cocktail in Kingston, it’s the kind of drink that invites pause. Smooth, refreshing, and exquisitely balanced, it dances between citrusy brightness and subtle botanical notes. It’s not just a drink, it’s a ritual I’ll be returning for, time and time again.

Among the standout dishes:

The Tofu Bowl: A revelation. While tofu rarely commands the spotlight, here it delivers a surprisingly assertive performance. Pan-seared to a delicate crisp, it holds a marinade rich with soy, ginger, and sesame, striking a perfect sweet harmony. It’s an excellent choice for vegetarians or anyone seeking a bold, plant-based burst of flavour.

The Teriyaki Salmon Bowl: A beautifully layered experience. It begins with bright notes, honeyed citrus playing across the palate before giving way to the lush, buttery richness of the salmon. There’s a gentle smokiness that grounds the sweetness, creating a dish that is both vibrant and deeply satisfying.

The Pork Belly Bowl: My personal favourite. The exterior boasts a golden, caramelised crackle that yields to tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat. Hints of garlic and soy enrich the bowl, striking a bold, savoury chord without veering into excess. The interplay of crispness and tenderness is masterful.

Fish & Chips Sandwich: A deceptively simple dish, executed with finesse. The fish was flaky and moist beneath its golden crust, but the true hero here is the house-baked bread, light and airy, yet robust enough to carry the weight of the fillings and sauces. A refined take on a classic comfort dish.

Half Sandwich & Soup Combo: Ideal for a midday bite. The seafood bisque had a luxurious, velvety consistency and layers of bold, comforting flavour. Paired with a sandwich of crisp vegetables and quality protein, it was the sort of satisfying, nourishing lunch that feels both indulgent and wholesome.

In this new chapter, Broken Plate isn’t just feeding appetites, they’re crafting moments. With Chef Stewart at the helm, the menu strikes a harmonious balance between creativity and comfort, offering a dining experience that feels both elevated and inviting. Whether you’re a devoted regular or discovering Broken Plate for the first time, this new chapter ensures a visit that lingers, one thoughtfully crafted, one bite at a time.
