‘We have to get rid of Holness’; Campbell hits back at ‘no Opposition’ comment

ST ANDREW, Jamaica — People’s National Party (PNP) General Secretary, Dr Dayton Campbell, has criticised Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ recent statement that he does not need an Opposition because his supporters are the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) most staunch and constructive critics.

“The prime minister said him nuh need no Opposition because his supporters hold him accountable. That is because him supporters don’t have no problem with the bank account dem,” Campbell charged among other allegations against Holness in relation to the prime minister’s financial affairs.

He was speaking at the Norman Garden Divisional Conference at the Rennock Lodge All Age in Rockfort on Sunday.

Last week, Holness told his supporters, “We really don’t need an Opposition, because our supporters hold us to account. In fact, our supporters are our staunch, constructive critics.”

Hitting back at the comment, Campbell said the prime minister was disregarding the voices of Jamaicans not in support of his party.

“It is not just about the PNP alone, because the PNP tries to hold him accountable, and some people say is politics that. What about the people who are no “p” at all, who want decent things to go in their country? What about the people who are not PNP or JLP, who want to put their country first?” he questioned.

Campbell continued, “He is saying to those people, ‘shut your mouth, mi nuh want to hear from you’. His supporters alone him interested in. That is what the Prime Minister said— that if you are not a Labourite, you don’t have nuh talk. Then a wah kind of prime minister this?”

Rallying his supporters, the PNP general secretary charged them with one responsibility in the upcoming general election.

“We have a duty comrades…I hope you understand the assignment. We have to get rid of this man,” he said.
