While many celebrities — most recently rapper Saweetie in 2021 — have recreated the iconic 2004 Esquire Magazine Gisele Bündchen Polaroid dress, no one has re-envisioned the look quite like Jamaican costume & production designer Anna-Lisa “@annaixe” Guthrie! The creative director, who has received plaudits for her ability to craft high-fashion pieces from unorthodox materials like rope, leaves, party flyers, Japanese fans, and car parts, has created yet another viral fashion moment, this time with a dress made from painted bars of soap. “I basically mixed all the paint colours myself, I used over 300 bars of soap, and almost 1,500 jump rings,” says Guthrie. “I felt inspired by Gisele Bündchen’s Polaroid dress photoshoot, so I ordered a 600-pack of Kacctyen mini soaps for hotels… It took me about two weeks to complete, give or take.”

Guthrie says she would love to exhibit the dress as a static art piece in a gallery, and describes the feedback as “out of this world”.

“I knew this was the most difficult and most time-consuming, and I had hoped that people would see and appreciate the process and work behind the finished product… so I am grateful it was received and valued in the intended way,” she adds.
