Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Cuba
CUBA (AFP) – Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Cuba early Wednesday morning after ripping a path of destruction through Jamaica, which authorities have designated a “disaster area.”
“Extremely dangerous hurricane Melissa makes landfall on southern coast of eastern Cuba,” the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an updated advisory.
Despite weakening to a category 3 storm, Melissa made struck the province of Santiago de Cuba with maximum sustained winds of approximately 120 miles (195 kilometers) per hour, the NHC said.
