Sanmerna Foundation, AFJ deliver major relief to marooned Hanover communities

HANOVER, Jamaica — The Sanmerna Foundation, working in partnership with the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ), carried out a large-scale humanitarian mission in Hanover this week, distributing more than 2,800 care packages to residents in Lookout, Haughton Meadows and Orange Bay, three communities heavily affected by Hurricane Melissa.

Lookout, a remote hillside district left cut off by collapsed roadways and perilous drop-offs, proved to be one of the most difficult areas to access. Despite the hazardous conditions, residents turned out in strong numbers, with priority given to the elderly and persons with disabilities who have been most vulnerable since the storm.

The outreach was bolstered by support from Food for the Poor, JetBlue, Dennis Shipping, and the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), whose combined efforts ensured that critical supplies reached families who have been isolated for days.

With this mission completed, the Sanmerna Foundation says it will expand relief operations to other marooned communities. Areas earmarked for upcoming outreach include Point in St James, previously accessible only by helicopter, as well as Tangle River, Kensington, Springfield, and Summer Hill. The foundation plans to share photos and videos documenting the latest round of recovery work.
