NMIA to temporarily close runway for RESA and electrical upgrade work
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), operated by PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL), will undergo a temporary runway closure on Thursday evening as part of a major phase of its ongoing Runway End Safety Area (RESA) Implementation Project.
The runway will close from 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 27, 2025, until 4:00 am on Friday, November 28, 2025, to facilitate the relocation of the Runway 12 threshold and the installation of switchgear redundancy.
The airport will close briefly after final flight operations and normal services will resume once the work is completed.
According to PACKAL, the upgrade works have been communicated to the airport community and relevant stakeholders through official aeronautical notices. No passenger flights are scheduled during the maintenance window, and travel is not expected to be affected. However, airport users and nearby communities may notice increased activity on the grounds as RESA works proceed.
The runway upgrade is part of PACKAL’s $11.5 billion (US$72 million) multi-year project to extend the runway and implement RESA in accordance with the Civil Aviation Act (2012) and international aviation safety regulations.
When completed, the RESA works will extend the runway by 300 metres, providing expanded safety areas at both ends for aircraft operations and emergency procedures. PACKAL says the initiative is the single largest investment in NMIA’s safety infrastructure and is scheduled for completion by July 2027.
