Cornwall College and Glenmuir win opening D’Cup quarterfinal games

MONTEGO BAY, St James – Former champions Cornwall College and Glenmuir High were winners on Saturday as the quarter-finals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition got underway.

Despite finishing the game with 10 men, Cornwall College beat McGrath High 2-0 in Montego Bay while Glenmuir High held off Kemps Hill High 3-2 in their Clarendon derby played at Glenmuir High in May Pen, both games in Group A.

Both Group B games — St Elizabeth Technical against Clarendon College, and Dinthill High against Christiana High — ended in 1-1 draws.

In Montego Bay, Cornwall College scored twice in the final 25 minutes plus stoppage as they handed McGrath High back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

Cornwall College had the better of chances in a lacklustre first half and they had to wait until the 66th minute when Shakeen Gibson unlocked the McGrath defence with a dribble into the six yards box, drawing goalkeeper Orlando Griffiths and three defenders before passing the ball to the wide open Carlondo Morris to slot the ball into the unprotected goal.

Cornwall College was reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute when goalkeeper Carlyle Tingling was given a straight red card by referee Romario Francis.

In time added, Griffiths misjudged a free kick taken by second half substitute Shaheem Bernard from about 22 yards, missing the ball that bounced just in front of him and got past him into the goal.

At Glenmuir, Kemps Hill lost the first game of the round for the third straight time as a comeback from 0-2 failed and they were beaten 3-2.

Kemps Hill had lost their opening game of the Round of 32 to Cornwall College 2-0 and then they were beaten 4-0 by STETHS in the first game of the Round of 16, finishing the game with nine players but still managing to advance.

Oneil Headley and Dunsting Cohen staked Glenmuir High to a 2-0 lead after 39 minutes before Kemps Hill pulled a goal back in the 76th minute.

Orel Miller them made the scores 3-1 in the 89th minute before Kemps Hill managed to cut the lead to a single goal in time added.

At STETHS, Kaieem Lewis gave the home team the lead when he scored from the penalty spot in the 50th minute but Rwanie Rampasaul salvaged a point for Clarendon College with a goal in the 57th minute.

Saturday’s Results

Cornwall College-2 McGrath High-0

Glenmuir High 3, Kemps Hill High- 2

STETHS 1, Clarendon College-1

Dinthill Tech 1, Christiana High-1
