Toll of up to $1,400 proposed for May Pen to Williamsfield leg of highway
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Transport has revealed the proposed tolls for the Williamsfield to May Pen leg of Highway 2000, with the highest costs at $1,400.
The proposed costs by vehicle class are class one $480, class two $720, and class three $1400.
The costs were revealed in a notice of intention to vary toll, as required under the Toll Roads Act.
The proposed tolls are slightly lower than the maximum toll chargeable for vehicles by class, which the ministry outlined to be as follows: class one $495, class two $990, and class three $1,485.
The May Pen to Williamsfield leg of the highway opened for travel in September 2023. Since then, toll collection, which was first proposed to begin in 2024, has not been enforced.
A series of pushbacks have been announced since, with the most recent coming on December 1st when collection was due to start. At that time, no new start date was announced.
The May Pen to Williamsfield section represents a significant easterly extension of the east-west leg of Highway 2000, officially named the PJ Patterson Highway. The new segment enhances connectivity significantly for motorists travelling to and from central Jamaican parishes such as Manchester.
Interested parties may forward their submissions in writing concerning the content of the proposed order within four days of the date of publication. Submissions on the toll order should be addressed to the Toll Authority and sent to tollauthority@mtw.gov.jm.
