Healthcare administrator Nia Nelson was first captivated by the distinctive fragrance worn by logistics coordinator Lucky Ugwu.

“It was the cologne!” she enthused, relating the story to Tuesday Style Vows (TSV).

“He walked past me, and I smelled his cologne… it was the best cologne I had ever smelled. It was, coincidentally, a couple of days before my birthday. He heard I was going out to celebrate with a few friends, literally came up to me and invited himself to the celebrations. It was our first conversation. I found it bold, but not offensive. Truth be told, I didn’t believe he’d actually come, but he did, and it’s been a journey since then.”

Years of close friendship paved the way for their 2023 leap of faith into a relationship. But while it took time to commit, Nia had harboured a secret soulmate certainty, forged in the terror of nearly losing Lucky in the initial days of their meeting.

“I had a cookout as part of my birthday celebrations, and he came. While we were having fun in the backyard, a drunk driver crashed into his parked car just moments after he stepped out of it. The idea of almost losing this man I had met a mere four days ago almost crushed me. It was something I had never felt before.

The confluence of events proved to be a stroke of destiny for both, fostering an inseparable bond that culminated in Lucky’s proposal in January 2024.

“We were leaving for New York and planning a going-away party. Or so I thought! Behind the scenes, he was planning to propose, with the help of my family and closest friends,” Nia informed
TSV. “As he was giving his thank-you speech at the end of the night, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him with the most beautiful ring and delicious cake.”

A year later, the couple, based in Texas, hosted a truly unforgettable affair beautifully fusing their Nigerian and Jamaican cultures. To the tunes of John Legend’s
Nervous, Nia, radiant in a two-piece ensemble — a lace top paired with a tulle A-line skirt by Alonuko — was escorted by her father, Crosswell Nelson, to her eager bridegroom. With Lucky’s uncle, Father Stephen Ugwu, guiding proceedings, Nia and Lucky committed their futures to one another before a host of loved ones.

The reception was marked by much laughter, genuine affection and heartfelt tributes to the newly-weds. Following dinner, Nia and Lucky honoured tradition by cutting their red velvet wedding cake from Sheila’s Home Pastries and opening the dance floor to Johnny Gill’s You For Me.

The newly-weds enjoyed their honeymoon at RIU Ocho Rios.
