For Beautiful Blooms principal Sharon Sterling, every plant has its charm, but none can rival the orchid. It is a conviction etched into the landscape of her Upper St Andrew home, where a stunning, tiered garden serves as the ultimate showcase for her favourite blooms. Graciously invited to explore this botanical retreat, Style Observer Gardening (SOG) found a garden that didn’t just meet our expectations; it far exceeded them.

The enchantment begins at the driveway, where a vibrant corridor of sun-drenched and shaded vandas lines one side, complemented by a lush greeting of crotons on the other. This is merely a prelude to the four-tiered masterpiece Sterling has cultivated. The first level showcases a delicate mix of phalaenopsis, dendrobiums, bromeliads and anthuriums, alongside poinsettias still radiant in their post-holiday glow. Rising to the second level, the collection expands into shaded orchids and garden staples like desert roses, hibiscus, bougainvilleas and a rare gerbera lily. Moving further upward, the path opens onto the botanical heart of the residence at the third level — a patio that blends indoor comfort with outdoor beauty, anchored by a stone fountain and a curated orchid display.

But the real magic is saved for the fourth level, affectionately called her secret garden. Here, within the confines of a narrow passage, Sterling has nurtured an exquisite orchid wall — a hidden treasure designed to be seen only from inside the home, and it remains the feature she is most proud to reveal to her inner circle.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been captivated by the colours, textures, and seasonal transformations of plants. To me, a garden adds immeasurable character to a home,” Sterling shared with SOG. That passion took root in her early twenties when she became a first-time homeowner. “I immediately began transforming the small, blank canvas at the front of our townhouse — though I had to follow my husband’s one request: ‘Please leave enough room for me to park the car!’’

Sharon’s heart belongs to all plants, but orchids have remained her singular focus for over two decades. Since settling into her home four years ago, she has moved with purpose, transforming the once-ordinary ground into a breathtaking botanical showcase through careful cultivation and vision.

“Orchids are unmatched in terms of their unique and stunning beauty with intricate patterns, bright colours, and delicate shapes. Learning about a different variety and getting it to thrive and bloom is a thrill that is difficult to beat,” Sterling explains. “The anticipation and emergence of that annual flush of blooms brings unbridled joy. I’m drawn in every day by their beauty and the endless cycle of experimentation they inspire.”
