JC’s Joseph Salmon committed to University of Nebraska
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica College’s (JC) promising discus thrower Joseph Salmon has committed to the University of Nebraska.
Salmon, who is expected to once again lead JC’s charges for Boys and Girls Athletics Championship honours, told Observer Online he believes Nebraska is the right pace to take his career further.
“Nebraska is full of exceptional athletes. Axelina (Johansson), who broke the indoor record for shot put, Cade Moran, who opened his season with 20 metres and lots more,” Salmon pointed out.
“When you’re around people who are competing at the highest level alongside you, it gives you a sense of drive that pushes you to do your best, and I don’t forget how welcoming they were when I went on the visit,” he noted.
The 18-year-old Salmon, who will turn 19 on September 22, will be off to Nebraska, where he will be studying Construction Management.
He had eyes popping with his first throw of the year, in which he hurled the discus to a massive 66.32m, smashing the record at the Purewater/RDannyWilliams/JC meet on January 10, 2026.
The Boys and Girls Athletics Championship record of 66.88m has been held by Olympian Travis Smikle since 2011, and Salmon is expected to better it later in the season.
He won the Class One discus at Champs in 2025 with a throw of 62.14m, and he is already way above that mark.
The powerful thrower who transferred from Clarendon College to Jamaica College said he wouldn’t be at the level he is at now “without the decision I made in the past”.
