KINGSTON, Jamaica — A man was shot dead during a police operation in the Highlight View community off Gordon Town Road, St Andrew on Tuesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as 33-year-old Doshane Mitchell, otherwise called “Puku” from Fifth Street in Greenwich Town, Kingston 13.

Reports indicate that during the operation, a police team was clearing a premises when they received information that a man was at another premises with a firearm. The cops said on arrival, a man was seen exiting a building.

The lawmen identified themselves and the man allegedly pointed a firearm in their direction and fired several rounds, upon which the police team took evasive action and returned fire. The man reportedly retreated inside the dwelling, where he fell clutching onto the firearm.

According to the police, a Glock 19 9mm pistol (modified with a switch) and affixed with a magazine containing three 9mm cartridges was retrieved from the injured man. He was then taken to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI), where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police said intelligence indicated that Mitchell was using the premises as a displacement location.

Checks, they said, revealed that Mitchell was previously arrested and charged with armed robbery and murder by the Kingston Eastern police. He was reportedly affiliated with the Fifth Street Gang, which operates in Greenwich Town; the 110 Gang, which operates in McIntyre Villa (Dunkirk) in east Kingston; and the Mad and Mean Gang from Highlight View.

Police said five other men believed to be aligned with the Mad and Mean Gang were taken into custody during the operation.
