Style Observer Gardening (SOG) continues its journey through the multi-tiered paradise of Beautiful Blooms principal Sharon Sterling, where a kaleidoscope of orchids brings a sense of sparkle to her Upper St Andrew home.

Sterling’s garden serves as both a labour of love and a creative outlet. It is a deeply personal refuge where the hard work of gardening is rewarded by an overwhelming feeling of peace.

“My garden is an evolving expression of creativity. I love mixing plants with ornaments and seating — those ‘inorganic’ touches are what really help me shape the atmosphere I want to achieve,” Sterling said. “For me, my garden is a place to relax, reflect and connect with God through nature.”

The secret to her lush garden lies in the details: Sterling has mastered the specific needs of her collection, balancing careful observation with a rigorous nutritional and hydration schedule.

“Our climate is friendly to a wide variety of orchids. However, different types require a different degree of water, and light. So it is important to understand the optimal growing conditions of each type, along with a robust nutrition programme… Sterling said. “Managing the various pests and diseases which can afflict the plants is another critical success factor. Most are quite hardy but appreciate a regular care routine”.
