Jamaica to produce avocados year-round with new grafting process
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Tree grafting is currently underway that could, for the first time, allow Jamaica to produce avocados year-round.
It follows a partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining and the Trees that Feed Foundation, which facilitated the introduction of three new avocado varieties, designed to close long-standing seasonal gaps in production.
In a statement on Wednesday, the foundation said the grafting process, now taking place at Bodles Research Station, was the result of more than a year of research, coordination and quarantine approvals between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
The foundation said the initiative strengthens national food security, supports farmers and positions Jamaica for greater agricultural resilience and export potential.
It added that once the research phase is complete, the varieties will be made available to farmers across the island.
