KINGSTON, Jamaica—Rushana Dwyer of Northwestern State University won the women’s 400m title on Thursday’s final day of the two-day Southland Conference Indoor track and field championships held at the Birmingham Crossplex, running a meet record 52.88 seconds.

The former Edwin Allen star broke the one-year-old championship record 52.97 seconds set by another Northwestern State athlete Maygan Shaw.

Dwyer had run 53.17 seconds to lead the preliminaries.

Donroy Brown, also of Northwestern State, was second in the men’s shot put with 17.62m.

On Thursday’s opening day of the South-Eastern Conference (SEC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, Machaeda Linton of Texas A&M University (TAMU) and Jordan Turner of Louisiana State University were both second in the women’s and men’s long jump respectively.

Linton equaled her season’s best 6.51m to finish behind teammate Morgan Davis who jumped a personal best 6.57m.

Turner jumped 8.10m in the men’s event.

Two Jamaicans will contest the women’s 200m final set for Saturday afternoon, Gabrielle Matthews of the University of Florida who ran a personal best 22.87 seconds, the fifth best and Carleta Bernard of the University of Texas who was eighth with a personal best 22.97 seconds.

Abigail Wolfe of the University of Texas also ran a personal best 23.51 seconds but failed to make progress.

World Athletics Under-20 men’s high jump champion Brandon Pottinger of Clemson University, produced a personal best 2.14m to take second in the men’s high jump at the ACC Indoor Championships held at the Track at New Balance in Boston.

Pottinger, who had attended the University of Tennessee, had the same clearance as the winner Shyhiem Scotland, also of Clemson.

Shenese Walker of Florida State University led the preliminaries of the women’s 200m with 22.98 seconds, while triple jump specialist Shantae Foreman of Clemson just missed qualifying for the final, as she was ninth with 23.84 seconds.
