Davina Bennett
Miss Universe 2017 second runner-up
Style Observer (SO): How would you describe Davina in a few sentences?
Davina Bennett (DB): I would say I am probably one of the most determined people I know! I am not a quitter, I am kind-hearted, I love big, and I am very empathetic.
SO: You have experienced amazing highs and, indeed, lows. Share with us a few of those highlights and disappointments.
DB: My highlights include working with renowned make-up brands like Dior, L’Oréal Paris, and NARS. I also had the opportunity to shoot billboard campaigns for prestigious brands such as Nordstrom’s fine luxury jewellery and Target’s collaboration with Kate Spade. However, the most significant disappointment was my accident in September 2025, which resulted in missing my first fashion week.
SO: Based on the disappointments what would your message be to a high school graduating class?
DB: Hold onto your dreams even when faced with obstacles. Remember, your journey can only be paused, not stopped, unless you allow it to be.
SO: What do you miss most when not in Jamaica?
DB: First, I miss my family and friends, and then the FOOD!
SO: What’s the first order of business once back on The Rock?
DB: My first order of business is to get the food I am missing when I am away, and definitely coconut water!
SO: What’s your preferred beverage?
DB: Appleton Signature Girly Pop
SO: What’s in it?
DB: 1.5 oz Appleton Estate Signature
5 oz Peach Schnapps
1 oz lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup
Ice
Sprig of fresh mint
SO: You were recently spotted at the Lost in Time concert. How was that experience?
DB: This was my first Lost in Time concert, and it certainly won’t be my last! While all the performances were enjoyable, Lila Iké and Chronixx, my favourite reggae artistes, truly stood out to me. I may be biased, but that’s perfectly fine!
SO: What, in your opinion, is the future of reggae?
DB: I think the future of reggae is Lila Iké.
SO: Travelling from May Pen to Kingston, what kind of music are you listening to?
DB: I’ve been listening, lately, to Olivia Dean’s entire album, The Art of Loving.
SO: Share with us the last book read.
DB: My last book would be the Bible. Through reading the scriptures, I’ve learned that God doesn’t prevent struggles. Instead, our faith during storms and unwavering devotion to Him will always guide us back to our desired destination. Faith, patience, and prayer are the guiding principles to overcome any challenge life throws our way.
SO: How would you describe your sense of style?
DB: My style hinges on so many things: Culture, the weather, my emotions, my aspirations and inspirations. My style is the Everywoman in me. It’s eclectic.
SO: Heels or flats?
DB: Heels are my favourite! I always love feeling taller than I actually am.
SO: An evening in or out?
DB: As a big foodie, I’m always excited about trying something new when I get the chance to go out for dinner.
SO: Which countries are on your summer travel itinerary?
DB: Greece, Italy, and somewhere in the Caribbean.
SO: Were you able to host a retreat alongside five women, who would they be and why?
1. Rihanna. She is such an inspiration to me as a Caribbean woman who’s achieved success in the industry.
2. Naomi Campbell. Such a renowned black model, she would be an incredible source of inspiration to hear her candid insights into her experiences navigating the modelling industry.
3. Grace Jones, on the other hand, has always been a model to emulate for me. Her striking physique, exceptional poses, and remarkable talent have made her an enduring fashion icon.
4. Viola Davis, my favourite actress and a source of inspiration for me. She has inspired me to aspire to become an actress myself. It would be wonderful to receive her valuable insights and tips in the acting field.
5. Sarah Jakes Roberts, because as a pastor, she has been a great guide towards me staying true to my faith and my relationship with God.
SO: Finally, what’s your personal credo?
DB: My personal credo is patience is bitter, but the fruit is sweet. Always give up on giving up!
